The Bible calls Christians “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20).
This phrase carries a lot of meaning for those who are walking with Christ. It means that we recognize that this world is not our home. We are not citizens here, rather our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). One day, we will go to our eternal home and live forever with our King. Until that day, we will continue to represent Christ as his ambassadors here on earth.
Every ambassador of another country has an embassy. It’s the office or headquarters where he goes to do the work of representing his nation. If we are ambassadors of Christ, then it stands to reason that we must have an embassy as well… A place to gather with other ambassadors to connect with one another, hear from our Sovereign King, and get a taste of our real home. This is what the local church is called to be in our world.
Outside of the River City Church building, you will find a bronze plaque that reads “Embassy of the Kingdom of Heaven.” This is our calling as a people group. We are a gathering of God’s redeemed people. But we are also a lighthouse and a safe haven for others as well. The embassy of River City Church is a gathering place that is also a sending point. We are sent on a mission by our King Jesus to make disciples who will make disciples.
